Silver eels tracked to the Sargasso Sea

On 26 August 2022, scientist R.M. Wright and her team published in the journal Nature (Scientific reports) the first results of Argos tagging of European eels captured in the rivers of the Azores and released near these islands . Initial work undertaken as part of the EELIAD (European Eels in the Atlantic: Assessment of Their Declines) project had shown that eels tagged at various locations in the colonisation zone, including the Mediterranean Sea, migrated towards the Azores, but tracking had not shown that they reached the Sargasso Sea. This latest work proves this and shows that one year after release in the Azores, an eel was found in the area defined by J. Schmidt, at the beginning of the 20th century, as the breeding area of the European eel in the Sargasso Sea (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-022-19248-8)
